Binsfeldius Cluster, Configure Distributed File System (DFS)

This entry is part 16 of 20 in the series Binsfeldius Cluster (Original)

As I mentioned in the previous post, I’ll be using a logically central location to store profiles, shared files and the SCVMM library. By using Microsoft’s Distributed File System you can consolidate shares under the domain tree regardless of their physical location.
The one share to rule them all…

I’m creating the TTGDFSROOT on the VM Asmodeus. This will be the main folder under which I can consolidate shares that reside on several file servers. Although this VM has the DFS storage attached (see storage design), this is not a prerequisite.

Installing DFS

  1. Name the server which will host the DFS Root
  2. Provide the name for the DFS Root folder, in my case TTGDFSROOT
  3. I’ve set the default permissions so that Administrators have full access and every authenticated user has read only access.

Make sure you select domain-based namespace as this will make the DFS share available under the domain, in my case under \tartarus.intranet. Also select 2008 mode.

Done.

Now you can add the shares which will appear under the DFS Root and which are accessible throughout the domain. For instance, an Install share that contains installation software.

One really handy use for DFS is to install the System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) library under DFS Root so you can have templates and ISO’s available wherever you need them.

Issue

Hmm, not seeing the TTGDFSROOT when browsing \tartarus.intranet, I do see the SYSVOL. It does work when I enter the complete address of \tartarus.intranetTTGDFSROOT

I’ll have to look into this.
